One of my earliest memories of being fascinated by a news story was the coverage of Astronaut Edward White's spacewalk (here is a link to the NY Times article from that day). I'm quite sure I read not the Times but the now-defunct NY Journal (World? Tribune? for a while, it was the World Journal Tribune. Kinda like Crosby, Stills, Nash, Young, Taylor, and Reeves; or John Mellencamp Cougar Cougar-Mellencamp Mellencamp) and they quoted White as saying, "I'm not coming back in unless you hold my hand!" They also reported that his heart rate "soared" to 200 beats per minute when he had a momentary problem closing the hatch.
